Does the new value show up for both "local value" and "master value"?

Sure sounds like it... But your browser could be timing out as well.
Can you do the query in batches and feed back # to the user or something
so they know it's not dead and the server and browser know everything is
kosher?...

There's a memory limit, but that shouldn't matter in an SQL.
Any of the other players (Oracle, Apache, Browser) could be timing out at
30 seconds as well...
