Configuration Variable user_agent

Hallo ! I run PHP 4.1.2. I want to set the user_agent which gets sent along when fetching file via the fopen(...) call. Normally this is "PHP/VERISON" in my case "PHP/4.1.2" I want to set a different user_agent. I tried to set the variable "user_agent" in the php.ini file. But the variable doesn't show up when I view a phpinfo(...) page. I also tried to set "user_agent" using the function ini_set(varname, value) during runtime but this didn't work either .... Was this directive removed ? I didn't find anything in the archives.
