Will Sessions work if Cookies are not activated?

Hi, I am designing a web site for I-mode (Japanese mobile computing, something like WAP) There are dozens of phones and all of them are using different "browsers". It is not possible to test any software on all these phones. So, I was wondering, what do sessions need from your computer/browser. are enabled cookies necessary? anything else that would stop recognizing a "strange" computer (in this case it's an internet-enable phone) ?
