escaping strings

Hi All,
I have heard that there is a problem with escaping strings in php, and I
found some contributed functions on www.zend.com to solve it, which are
function mysql_unescape_string()
and function mysql_escape_string(), so is this problem solved in php4.02 or
should we use the contributed functions ? and can anybody explain briefly
what the problem exactly is .
