Would it not work to fork a new process with the only job in life to send
periodic output to the browser?
I know you can fork a new process in perl, I haven't looked at PHP to see if
you can do this, but if PHP will let you fork a new process, that might be
an option. Parent process can handle your request. Child can print data to
the browser, then sleep. Provided PHP will let you fork() and sleep().
Anyone know any more about this?

This won't work if the back end is hung up on a
query that is taking > 5 minutes to run.
