session_register() question

Hi there,
I just started exploring the PHP4's session capabilities. So far my expiriments didn't
work that well. One question that I have is whether I have to use session_register() before or after
giving a value to a variable.
So this:
session_register("x");
$x = 123;
or this:
$x = 123;
session_register("x");
What does session_register("x") do with my variable ? Will it be erased or not ? I have
seen examples using both methods.
