Varchar problem in Oracle8.1

Hi All,
Has any one faced a problem while retriving the varchar field in Oracle
8.1 db.
I am able to get Number and date fields and even BLOB too but not
Varchar or char, Can u guess where is the problem.
My conf is as fillows,
Database : Oracle 8.0.5 running on WIn NT Server
Redhat linux 6.2 with Apache 1.3.12, and Oracle 8.0.5 client installled
and PHP 4.0.2
Any help will be really appreciated
