how know when a session expires?

hello people.
i'm brazilian and dummie in this list. apologizes for my english... :-)
well... my problem is that i *need* know exactly when a session expires. i
was thinking in utilize the instruction session_set_save_handler for set the
functions "close" and "destroy" for work that how i wait... but:
- what's the difference between close and destroy a session?
- any of them works automatic?
