Failing of imagecreatefromstring function

I've been using func "imagecreatefromstring" for
creating JPEGs obtained from MySQL database.
The function sometimes fails terminating script
with no error message.
Has somebody reached such problem?
I don't want to save images to temp files.
Linux 2.4.26, PHP 4.3.8, gd 2.0 or higher
