If you just want to see if mail() works try it.
<?php
if(mail(...)) echo 'yay!';
else echo 'boo!';
?>
If it doesn't work then your mail setup is not working. Setting up an
SMTP server has nothing to do with PHP. Google will probably help you
if that's your issue.
