System and output

Hello ! I use system() to call a programm on the server. The programm outputs multiple lines of text. The problem: I want to put the output of the programm into a variable instead of printing it to the screen. If I use exec(), I only get the last line of the output to my variable. But I need all lines... Please help ! Martin
