Call to undefined function imagettftext()

While working with some CAPTCHA stuff I get the following error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function imagettftext().
The PHP Manual states that the function is available in PHP 5
(http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.imagettftext.php), and I have
compiled with GD support. What am I missing?
