The standard perl regexp for matching double-quote delimited strings is this: /"([^"\\]|\\.)*"/ which copes nicely with escaped characters. You'll probably need to double up the backslashes in php. $regex = '/"([^"\\\\]|\\\\.)*"/'; -robin
