HTML-based chats are always, always, always pieces of kitty droppings. As
much as I despise Java-lag, I've seen some good, fast Java chat applets that
work *very* well. Chatting is not something HTML should be used for, IMHO.
HTML was not designed for real-time ANYTHING, nor is it suited for it.
MySQL, on the same hand, is certainly not suited for the many, many table
insertions and deletions that would be necessary for such an application --
although I'm not sure how you'd implement it.
Stick with an application (or applet) for real-time stuff.
