session expired in <30 minutes?!

Facts of the case:
session.cache_expire is set to the default 180 minutes
session.cookie_lifetime = 0, which means "until the browser is closed."
I store username & password info in session variables.
The user's session info expired after <30 minutes. What else should I
check for?
