.htaccess and .htpasswd

AuthName "Restricted Area"
AuthUserFile "/www/html/path/to/file/admin/.htpasswd"
require valid-user

Both files are in same directory.
Why it doesn't work?
Can I use as AuthUserFile ".htpasswd" since they are in the same directory?
I know its not smart but let's get this working and I'll move .htpasswd later to "upper level" :)
