There's not a hell of a lot to it (but a pretty awsome module in it self)
Basically once setup you can access all your Java Class's. So if you've
developed a calender class to see who's available when.. PHP can talk to it.
etc
When playing around with it i wrote some notes for myself (based on the
ext/readme stuff) so here it is. Hope it helps (its actually a PHP script
and will tell you when it works)

Subject: java extension functions/classes
I'm running PHP4.03(dev)/Win under WinNT, using Apache as the web
server.
Can someone point out where I can find information on Java-extensions
and the
available functions/classes? The distribution doesn't have a
ext/java/readme
file (or even the ext/ directory..)
Thanks..
