You can do those from source also, or use RPMs -- but you need to install an RPM for jpeg-devel, tiff-devel, xyz-devel etc any time you want to be able to compile source that uses the corresponding library. It seems de reguire to include this now: http://php.net/gd though I'm not sure compile instructions are actually there...
