This is because the browser is interpreting the file that PHP sends to it...
So you must send signals to the browser as well... In this case <BR>
So rewrite your lines as:
<?php
echo("Hello from php.<br>\n");
echo "This should be the second line.<br>\n";
echo "And this should be the third.<br>\n";
echo "And this the fourth.<br>\n";
?>
