Shell Redirection in safe_mode

Since i enabled safe_mode in PHP, commands like exec("mysqldump >
/tmp/123.sql") dont work any longer. So is redirection ">" disabled in
safe_mode ?
mysqldump is executable from my safe_bin dir an i got write permission
on the specified directory.
