php4 crashing servers

setting maxclients to 150 in apache
and having a linux box with 250 megs of ram
crashed the box with an error saying
VX: cannot free_pages
etc something like that.
I am stiull running php3 and would like to move to php4.
should i compile with low-memory?
I still can;t beleive php4 crashed our servers like that.
anyone run into this?
