Make sure your Listener service is up and running on the server, and that your TNSNames.ora file is setup correctly. Most of the time TCP/IP is the fastest connection - we've had huge difficulties trying to get named pipes working from NT4 to Oracle 8.1.5 or 8.1.6 TCP/IP is fast, but WinXX still puts a wrapper on everything, even if it's the local machine (127.0.0.1) Dunno if Win2k does this, but NT4 SvcPack 6a still has it.
