mysql_field_type returns unexpected result

Hi all, I recently started using this function to assist with validation of form data before building my INSERT query being especially important since i my fields flagged NOT NULL in mysql. integer and decimal fields returns expected "int" for integers, "real" for decimals (all i have tried at this stage), BUt the wierdness occurs when a text field comes back as as type "blob". HAs anyone seen this or kno why this occurs. MySQL version is 3.23.19-beta-debug under Win32 have moeved the DB over to my linux box yet to se iof there are any differences. Does anyone know anything??
