OK, I'm finding some stuff out. The key here is
address-collecting spiders
and their use by spammers. *ugh* Now I see what my friend
was asking.
Here's a link with info and some other links (to other links....I'm sure :-)

Well, here's the scoop: The email encoder
http://www.emailaddresses.com/mailto_encoder.htm
Just entered an email addy to get encoded (A free service). Here's my addy encoded:
<A HREF="
mailto:mdearman@inficad.commdearman@inficad.com"</A>
Although my linewrap might of screwed that up.
Ugly, ain't it?
But wondering (read their explanation of what's happening)
how, code wise, they're 'encoding' the email address. Maybe this is obvious to
someone. Can something similar be done with PHP code? Any hints would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike D.
