Howdy all. I've come across a problem which *may* be caused on my end,
but I don't think so.
Forgive the offtopic - MS angle of the post - I'm looking for people
who have come across this as well, and there probably is someone
who has seen this.
We've got a PHP app that, when finished processing, gzips all the
content
and sends it to the client, if the client can accept gzip encoding.
This
works fine on my system here at the office with both IE5 and NS4.7.
However, it didn't work at home with IE5 (both systems win98 - haven't
tried
the Linux netscape, but don't see why it wouldn't work). The
behaviour IE5 (and 5.5 apparently) exhibited was that the
browser did abosolutely nothing - clicking a link just had it sit there.
It hit the server, at least once, because it challenged my SSL
certificate,
so I know something was going on, the first time, but it just sat there.
Further inspection showed that my version of IE5 was 5.00.2614.xxxx.
That
worked. The ones that didn't were higher than that. 5.00.3104.xxx and
higher.
Gzip compression DOES work with these IE5 versions when connecting
to IIS5 which has compression turned on.
I'm rambling, but that's the background to this. My theory is that
newer IE5s and 5.5 (at least on windows - haven't tried mac)
DON'T really accept gzip encoding, but some special IIS5 brand
of zipping. This is where the conspiracy aspect comes in - MS
makes a new client that has special functions which only work with
their new server, prodding people to upgrade the servers to IIS5
to get the 'benefit' of compressed content to the huge numbers of
IE users out there. Off-the-wall I know, but it's what appears
to be happening.
Can anyone confirm this? Anyone out there using leknor's gzip
class (which is what we used)? Any insights?
Thanks!
