modifying MAX_EXECUTION_TIME

How do I alter MAX_EXECUTION_TIME in a particular script?
I have a script with heavy db(oracle) load, and it time out.
I tried a "putenv("max_execution_time=500"), but phpinfo() says it is not
modified, and the script times out.
How do I set a new max_execution_time in a particular script?
