Prob with search functionality

Hi, I have just started programming aswell as learning PHP so here is my
very 'newbie'question:
If a user wants to search for a client using 4 checkboxes(ie.Reference,
Caseno, IDno and Surname) and/or filling in the above criterias values in a
textfield if the user knows the relevant information or even just typing a
few letters or numbers and putting it in wildcards(%), how will I be able to
achieve this if I am connecting to an Interbase database? I have no idea
where to start with this!
