To all who hard code CFM - I'm sorry about my blanket statement, I was going off of the relationships I have with about 10 CFM coders who all give me blank stares when I ask them how to code something in CFM (usually a response like "Well you hit this button, etc"). One person said we should "expand our horizons", so to speak, and use other platforms. I personally use the very best I can get. I don't use NT for mainy reasons - on being that NT has never been as stable as Linux (in my experiences) and I don't use Win9x for my workstation because it's less stable than NT. I don't use CFM because it makes absolutely no sense to me - It looks like HTML with if/else statements. Also (correct me if I'm wrong) it's written in PERL, which is in turn written in C++ (as of the latest verison AFAIK), which would make CFM a 3rd generation language. On top of that you have to run a seperate service for CFM. PHP on the other hand is written in C and thus a 2nd generation language and is ran from within Apache - no seperate processes (AFAIK). Now let's look at perl - good language, lots of people I know use it - but it wasn't designed from the ground up to be a web language like PHP was. It doesn't have striptags(), etc. built right in (like PHP). Also, again from my experience, mod_perl doesn't scale that well. Of course you could always use C, but I don't have months to write a web app, I have days (if I'm lucky and design/mgmt isn't in my way). So I choose PHP - it's light, extensible, easy to understand, and EXTREMELY logical (when was the last time you said "I wish PHP did this ..."??) Sure I'm die hard about PHP - because it does EVERYTHING I need it to - from large scale web apps to backing up my email via crontab (the PHP binary rules!). I'm also die hard about Linux - but I recently had to come to the conclusion that Linux wasn't as great as I thought it was - FreeBSD serves web pages about 10x faster (from our in house tests) than Linux and we won't even compare our old linux DB to our new Sun 420R running Solaris with MySQL! If something comes along that is better than PHP I'll switch - until then I support Rasthmus and everthing that PHP is about. --Joe ================================================================================ = Joe Stump joestump98@yahoo.com http://www.miester.org = ================================================================================ "Real programmers don't comment their code.
