You can have simple table with two fields only:
id | in
you can even make it one "name" if you want to
then on log on check this table for a present ID, if it is there give a
message like "please log in with a different login" otherwise let him in and
add him to the table till he's logging out.

I have written a simple sign up script in which you enter your name ,user
name and password ,which is then stored in a mysql database
However my problem is i want to be able to check if that username is
already in use and if so then for it to go back to the form and reqquest the
user to choose a different user name,but i dont know how to.
