Per Nicolas's request here is how I went about finding my PHP job.
- Find a small place that thinks you know what you're talking about and convert
it to a PHP shop (I did this with www.affordablecomputers.com) - become the
main programmer.
- Make your own PHP site one of the coolest on the net (http://www.miester.org -
a matter of opinion ;o) Then release it Open Source (Open Source companies
will like seeing "Published Open Source Software" or the like on a resume.
- Look were you normally would for a programming job here are some sites:
- www.dice.com (were I found my job)
- www.phpbuilder.com (were I find most of my contract work)
- www.careerbuilder.com
- If you are good enough to code PHP for a living you should know (or have an
idea) what sites are running PHP. Submit your resume to EVERY ONE of them (I
have submitted mine to google about 500 times - but requiring a masters and
preferring a doctorate puts a damper on things). If you are a decent coder one
of them is BOUND to call back.
- Personally email EVERY job on the job sites that interest you - tell them that
you're great and you're basically the world's best hacker. Then, if it's a
contract job, tell them that you're not like other contractors and that your
code is beautiful, but it's gonna cost them! (minimum of $80/hr. - DON'T SELL
YOURSELF SHORT!!! - I made my old company, the one I converted above for $10
an hour, pay me $80 when I got my real job)
Those are my pointers - they helped me get the job that I have today. Every so
often I go out and follow this procedure. Even though I'm not going to be taking
any of the jobs it's nice to know so many of them are out there.
