Thanks to Ben for helping me on this.
Here is how to get PHP4 set up on RedHat 6.2
-install the apache server rpm (I installed version 1.34)
-install the apache developer rpm
-download PHP4 (my version was 4.0.3)
-tar zxf ./php-4.0.3
-cd ./php-4.0.3/
-I wanted PHP with SNMP support, so this is what I had for configure.
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs --enable-safe-mode
--with-exec-dir=/usr/bin --with-system-regex --disable-debug
--enable-debugger --enable-magic-quotes --enable-track-vars --enable-sysvsem
--enable-sysvshm --enable-track-vars --with-xml --with-ftp --with-snmp
make
make install
Then go into /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and add:
LoadModule php4_module <path to libphp4.so>
and in the AddModule list, add:
AddModule mod_php4.c
Restart Apache, and everything should work.
