I think she means to have the user just upload the single big image
and have PHP autogenerate the thumbnail based on that image after
the upload.
I use the convert utility that is part of Imagemagick to do that.
From memory there's an issue with transparent gifs loosing
transparency that you will need to consider (if people are
to be uploading transparent gifs).
