Charsets ?

Hi, I hace a functions that does a think, it cleans strange characters:
$trash_string='whateverwithstrangecharacterslikeñ';
$clean_string=strtr(trim($trash_string)," 'ç/-àáãèéìíòóõùúüñ()äëïö,", "__c__aaaeeiiooouuun__aeio_");
Its strange, but if I work with php's charset iso8859-15 it works fine, but i I set php to utf-8 it does not work.
Any ideas?
