Well, I'm sucked in - I have to throw in my support for BBEdit. It rocks!
Here's a little ammo - live editing of files via ftp, customizable keyboard
shortcuts for everything (my favorite: hit command-B and everything between the
first set of braces hilites, keep hitting and it grows to the enclosing set of
braces - or option command b and everything between a set of html tags hilites,
keep hitting ... you get the idea), a glossary to dump whatever little tags you
want in it (with keyboard shortcuts of course - and all the most common tags are
already available), I can do all selections of anything with the keyboard
(combinations of shift, option, command and the arrows get you chars, words,
lines, paragraphs, etc), multi-file regex search/replace (and it can remember
these regex's too - heck I can run a perl script (with a keyboard shortcut, of
course) in situ over top of anything in any or all of the windows if the built
in regex is not sufficient) - of course entry into the excellent search/replace
can be done from the keyboard without ever entering a dialog, any length _and
width_ text file (I've tried 3 PC text editors and they all insert a line break
if the width exceeds 500 or so characters??? - very rude - I'm sure there must
be one which doesn't have this limitation, right?). Spell checker (an html spell
checker too), utilities to check syntax, broken links, etc. The list goes on -
I'm not sure what else one could ask for. It also has all the GUI niceties you
could ask for as well - split page, excellent drag and drop, customizable
toolbars, doesn't care if your text is Mac, Unix or PC - just keeps the line
endings the same (or changes them as you want). The only thing is it is
Mac-only. I just tried VIM on my PC here, and it seems just like VI on my BSD
box. Of course that only shows my ignorance in using it. Maybe I need a quick
demo. I just don't get these UNIX editors - I use pico if I have to! So tell me,
what am I missing! :-)
