It means compile the extension. It doesn't include it in the binary.

Depends on the extension. I guess the difference lies in how you include it: --enable-ftp doesn't build an extension (.so or .dll), but --with-curl does. The -internals list will be able to give you more info on the differences. -- Postgresql & php tutorials http://www.designmagick.com/
