There are 3 or 4 different XML parsing engines available for PHP 4.
Pick one.
If all else fails:
$xml = "<translation>MY _CONTENT</translation>";
preg_match("/<translation>([^<]*)<\\/translation>/", $xml, $content);
echo $content[1];
