There's a 4th parameter to the method: xmlrpc_server_call_method And, the options are all explained on this page: http://xmlrpc-epi.sourceforge.net/main.php?t=php_api#output_options Not only can you set the encoding to UTF-8, but you can also and and remove the whitespace which was also nagging me.
