Under CGI, each page hit has to fire up php.exe, run it, and exit. Next
page hit, fire up php.exe, run it, and exit. That sounds horrendous.
However, if your OS has a decent caching system, and you have enough RAM
to hold all the processes you expect to be running, plus php.exe (rather
small RAM footprint), it will stay in the RAM cache and not be nearly as
slow as you might expect.
Of course, we are talking about an MS product here, which may or may not
be doing a decent RAM cache of processes in the first place...
Buy more RAM. That's always a good idea. :-)
AFAIK, the session stuff should work fine under CGI... It's just cookies
and munged URLs/POSTs to schlep the ID around if they have cookies off...
The Module versus CGI only matters for functionality (not performance,
functionality) when there's some sort of inter-process communication
involved between the server and PHP (or PHP and itself, I suppose could
matter...)
