I agree that the in_array function is useful, but the OP was asking for a way to shorten (a == 1 or a == 2). Maybe the question was poorly stated and meant to ask how to compare a variable to a larger number of values but that's not what I got from it. I read it as an 'I want to save my fingers a bit of typing' and wondered if I was missing the point. I beg your pardon. -Stut
