If you ran out of RAM, more space in the home directory won't help.
There's a compile-time switch for ./configure that lets you compile in
less RAM, though of course I forget its name...
./configure --help | grep memory
should yield something...
If you're actually low on hard disk space, you could maybe convince
./configure to throw .o files into /tmp or something...
./configure --help | less
and start reading, looking for stuff about where to store object files and
whatnot -- near the top of what you're reading.
