How are you running PHP? What are you trying to accomplish with setting the env var?

Hello again; I'm wondering if it is possible to create an $_ENV var with a php script running under a web server. I'm not sure where to look in the manual or other documentations for this. Isn't there a set_env() function or something like it? (would apply to php 4 0r 5x) Thanks in advance.
