Timothy -
Just a few insights from the php community =)
As stated in the message below PHP is very supported. Speaking of the
portablity issue how is ASP for portability?? Find an ASP server for linux!!
let me help you out on this one www.chilisoft.com that is about it. Also
take the time to read some reviews of this product... again let me help
you... Slow, not all features supported, etc. Goto php.net and look at their
links and/or projects pages mabye not over abundent but it will start a
neverending path of resources. You will most likly find alot of projects
that are 0.01beta. At least they are honest and don't put something like
phpProject2000. Why is everything always in beta? That means that we are
always working to improve them.
Speaking from a more personal experence standpoint, please visit
www.pcdiscounters.com I alone built this site in 4 days with PHP, yet it is
robust, and can handle quite a few hits before it starts bogging down. The 4
day schedule was because of presure from up top, obviously with no clue
about what something like that entales, but with the power and easy to use
PHP it happend. Of course now that the pressure is off I will go back and
tweak the code for better performance though.
For administration, let see, www.phpnuke.org, www.egrail.com, these are
more than just administration tools they are full on content management
systems. And for www.pcdiscounters.com in that 4 day schedule I wrote my own
administration tool that can add/remove content from the main page, file
managment, database administration, server administration, email and FTP
administration for sites that they sub-host, etc, etc. I can even restart
the server and it will generate yet another page of any errors there were in
the boot process. Doing this in ASP, CFML, JSP, would have been harder,
taken more time, and according to your benchmarks would be considerably
slower.
I am not for a second going to say that PHP is perfect, it isn't by far.
But how long does it take M$ to come out with a patch for ASP? Explain to me
why JSP can only spit out 13 pages per minute? And how much did Allaire pay
to be put at #1? With a price tag like that I am sure they can afford it
though. Then again I guess the price is justified, after all they do have
"some more advanced features, including arrays, structures..." as well as
the astounding ability to "...access several databases."
Also I would like to add that my personal favorite editor is UltraEdit32
which I have also used for PERL, JavaScript, C, C++, and a few others. You
might want to give it a try on you next CFML, or ASP project, it supports
just about every language known to man, with syntax coloring, an all the
other goodies.
Thanks,
Jesse Binam
