Where is the installer script?

Something been on my mind for months: Why was the './setup' script removed from the PHP package? I used to be able to run that, and answer questions, and I'd have PHP. Now I have to manually run the './configure' with all the flags - as there are more flags to do, it becomes difficult. OK, OK. I can feel the flames on their way - 'newbie', 'luser', 'you suck', 'your [sic] too stupid to use PHP', etc. But PHP USED to have this, and it was removed. Was there a tech reason for removing it? I'm not stupid - I've compiled this dozens of times, and can do it now OK, but installation was a topic at our last (first!) PHP user group, and others asked about this as well. What happened?
