A cookie is a HTTP header, much like the headers in your email, like
Subject:, To:, From:, etc.

A session is something that us programmers sometimes use cookies to
implement. A session is basically you being authenticated (so to
speak) on a web site, just a you would log into your email, while the
program is still open, you don't need to enter in your password again
to get new mail. However if you close your email program, and restart
it, you need to log in again. So, for example, when your email
program is closed, your session has ended. This is similar to
sessions on a web site -- but not necessarily with the emphasis on the
password -- the emphasis is usually on a unique identifier.
