alright, then there was a (minor) syntax error. I just corrected it in my
script, so that it says
$a = (isset($b) ? &$b : &$c);
however, it still doesn't work. It still complains about a syntax error.

So, this seems to be not a syntax error in itself, but a "limitation of
PHP".
