Templates allow us to the following:
Easily add internationalization (we've added a wrapper around the PHP
Libs template function).
Easily allow our designers to work on the graphical design at the same
time as the developers add new functionality/fix bugs.
Create the graphical design when it suits the designer.
Update the graphical design without input from developers.
It isn't as efficient as doing it the hard core way, but it is much more
efficient when it comes to maintainability, expandability. It also makes
it easier to add stuff like themes (hate them, but often requested),
change the design, create different designs for different sites.
All in all templates are freeing our resources, the designers and the
developers can concentrate on their work instead of finding out what the
other guys have been doing to the code. It furthers code reuse.
For us it saves us a lot of time when creating a new portal site for a
client, we just grab components from our packages, smack them together,
and off to the designers and content providers. It's like Ford's
assembly line.
