Hi Adrian,
I'll make some general statements, as I see some places it is being used
properly, and some places where XML is a step back.
1. XML is useful for a 'lingua franca' on the internet.
2. XML is useful to transfer data from one app to another.
3. XML is useful to create the skeleton that your presentation layer(s) sits
on top of.
4. XML is NOT useful to to large data storage, where you need to update or
query large amounts of data.
That being said, what I'm going for is relational databases are still best
for storing and managing data, but XML is great when putting that data out
for another app to consume, or putting the data out so it can be transformed
(via XSLT) into xHTML, WML, PHP, etc. - producing additional consumer layers
without writing any additional application code.
Where to get started in PHP? Figure out where your data is coming from, how
you want to use it, and then check out the following references:
http://www.php.net/manual/ref.xml.php the XML
functions.
http://www.phpwizard.net/resources/tutorials/xml_with_php.html
phpWizard
tutorial for parsing XML with PHP.
http://xmlrpc.usefulinc.com/doc/ Edd Dumbill's
XML-RPC for PHP (same idea
as SOAP, lower level.)
This should get you started, hope is helps!
Best regards,
Andrew
