I'll respond to the list as well...
I'm assuming you mean from a non windows box - SQL from PHP on Windows
is pretty straightforward thing (if only via ODBC).
Yes, we're doing it. Andrew Hill will probably mention openlink's package
for doing this, and if your client has the budget to accomodate it, go for
it.
I'm sure that you'll get good support from them (heck, he gives
pretty good support here without getting paid already). Easysoft is another
method I know of someone using, with less than stellar results (large
volumes caused problems, and the support couldn't satisfy him).
We chose the freetds route - freetds.org has an open source tds
driver. TDS is the protocol used to talk to Sybase and MSSQL server.
We've had *almost* no problems with this at all. Only real issue has
been more of a networking issue internally, as far as I can tell,
but it is straightened out and Linux/PHP <--> MSSQL7 (on NT4) is
fine and solid. We're *almost* in production (eventually around 1500 users
-
we're piloting rather successfully with around 40 this month). Bigger
headache is migrating user accounts, sending new info to people, etc.
