LDAP search & warning messages

Hi,
I have two ldap related questions, appreciate any help or info on these:
(1). The scope variable that limits the part of the directory tree is
not
taken into consideration of PHP ldap_search function. Is there is an
implementation issue? Any future plans to include that?
(2). If given a wrong search base, ldap_search comes back with
following warning message:
Warning: LDAP: Unable to perform the search: No such object in
test.phtml on line 70
Is there is any way to make it fail quietly instead of spewing out the
warning message.
