What if you would just put this few lines in a new file like: <? echo 'here we go'; phpinfo(); ?> then will the error persist and what line it is at then? What I feel is that your code wasn't written in a "natural" way. I mean it had some brackets or some in&out PHP mode left over which weren't a problem within PHP3 but are troublesome on PHP4. Unless the code above also gives you a parse error.
